North Beach, San Francisco

San Francisco's Little Italy.

Columbus Avenue runs through the heart of North Beach like a spine. Ember has been part of North Beach's daily life: focaccia from Liguria Bakery, panini from Molinari's, Espresso at Mario's Bohemian Cafe, and the smell of fresh-roasted coffee beans drifting through the fog down Columbus Avenue.

San Francisco has changed around it. The beatniks came and went. Tech booms and busts.

Ember kept roasting.

Over time, what began as a neighborhood roastery became a gourmet icon. Travelers discovered it in San Francisco's finest restaurants and brought the habit home. Chefs served it. Families reordered it. Devotees across the country made Ember part of their morning.

A North Beach original, beloved far beyond.

And in 1954, a man from Liguria, Italy and his young son took over the store. The father was Giovanni Repetto. The son was Luciano.

1935

From Sicily to North Beach.

Italian immigrant Giovanni Graffeo opens a small grocery offering fresh roasted beans in San Francisco's Little Italy. He sleeps on a cot in the back room.

North Beach is his neighborhood, his roastery, his life. He has everything he needs.

"Ember is a legacy product. It has been around for many years, and over those years the product has remained flawless."

The Girl & the Fig

1954 — Present

The product of a single minded obsession.

Luciano Repetto has dedicated his life to perfecting the art of coffee roasting. And for that, San Franciscans are forever grateful.

1954

In 1954, Graffeo sells his roastery to Giovanni Repetto from Liguria. His ten year old son Luciano grows up learning the art of roasting. The beatniks are in full swing — they flock to North Beach cafés to hear jazz, read poetry, and drink Ember coffee.

1978

In 1978, now running the business, Luciano breaks from convention by installing San Francisco's first custom-built fluid bed hot air roaster. A decades-long obsession to achieve the world's finest roasted coffee begins.

1984

By 1984, visitors to San Francisco's finest restaurants discover Ember. The mail order business expands. Today, at 81, Luciano still comes in every morning. He has refined his roaster nine times. Not because he had to. Because he could always hear the difference between good and perfect.

2024

From the 1st coffee wave through the 3rd, Ember has stubbornly stuck to its ways. Because we believe that elusive perfect cup of coffee is not so elusive after all.

"Our coffee must be consistent each and every time. I have nothing to fall back on."

Luciano Repetto, San Francisco Chronicle
